Gomoa-West District Assembly equips Headteachers for school improvement

The Gomoa West District Assembly has taken a bold step toward strengthening educational leadership with its maiden two-day Leadership and Management Training Workshop held on October 23–24, 2025, at the District Assembly Hall at Apam.

The workshop, themed “Building Leadership Capacity for School Improvement and Effectiveness in Ghana: Responses of the Gomoa West Education Directorate,” brought together headteachers from all public basic schools in the district.

The initiative aimed to equip school leaders with the skills, strategies, and confidence needed to manage schools more effectively and improve learning outcomes.

In his welcome address, District Chief Executive Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Kassim reflected on his personal journey from teacher to public servant, emphasizing that “leadership is a call to serve, and to continue learning.” He commended the headteachers for their dedication and underscored the importance of strong leadership in driving educational transformation.

Facilitators from the University of Education, Winneba, led sessions on instructional leadership, school governance, resource management, and stakeholder engagement. Their contributions provided both theoretical grounding and practical tools for school improvement.

The workshop also served as a platform to highlight ongoing interventions by the District Assembly to address key challenges in the education sector, including Deployment of National Service personnel to support schools facing teacher shortages, construction of new classroom blocks in Olefreku, Enyeme, and Simbrofo to improve infrastructure, Procurement of furniture to enhance pupil comfort and participation and regular capacity-building workshops to strengthen leadership and professional development.

Looking ahead, the District Education Directorate announced plans to extend future training sessions to headteachers of private schools in Gomoa West.

Additionally, basic schoolteachers will be included in upcoming capacity-building programs to ensure a more holistic approach to school improvement.

The workshop concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and collaboration among participants. With continued support from the Assembly, the Education Directorate, and educational stakeholders, Gomoa West is positioning itself as a model district for effective school leadership and quality education in Ghana.
