The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has cautioned the public against the deliberate spread of misinformation and disinformation following the circulation of a viral video linked to an incident at the Kasoa New Market fire scene.
In a statement, the Service reminded the public that the spread of false or misleading information is punishable under Ghanaian law, urging citizens to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
GNFS acknowledged public concerns surrounding the video but stressed that the matter is currently under Police investigation.
The Service appealed to the public to refrain from drawing conclusions based solely on social media footage and to await the official outcome of the investigations.
“We acknowledge the concerns raised by members of the public regarding the video in circulation. However, the matter is under Police investigation, and we urge everyone to remain calm and wait for the official findings,” the statement said.
Earlier, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DO II Desmond Ackah, clarified that the Service does not condone any form of assault or misconduct by its personnel.
He further explained that the viral video did not depict an assault on a journalist, but rather an incident involving a man who allegedly attempted to steal at the fire scene.
Mr Ackah stressed that no officer of the Service supports acts of violence or abuse of power, adding that GNFS remains committed to professionalism and accountability.
He noted that should investigations establish wrongdoing on the part of any fire personnel, appropriate disciplinary measures would be applied, with dismissal being the severest punishment available under the Service’s regulations.
