The Ghana Meteorological Agency has issued a warning of above-average rainfall across the country, particularly in coastal areas, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

The Deputy Director of Forecasting at GMet, Joseph Porturphy, explained this on JoyNews’ The Pulse show, saying that Ghana is expected to experience intense rainfall between April and October, with a high risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying and coastal regions.

“The eastern coast of Ghana, from the Central Region to Aflao, will experience rainfall above normal levels,” Mr. Porturphy said.

“This means the rainfall will exceed what we experienced in the past two years, so we should prepare for more rain, especially for those of us living along the eastern coast.”

He added that the eastern coast includes areas from Aflao to Ada, Tema, Accra, Kasoa, Winneba, and parts of Cape Coast. As a result, Accra will also be affected by the heavy rains. He added.

“The main rainy season will last until the first week of July, continuing through August and September, with a brief dry spell in between,” he continued. “The rains will return at the end of September and last through October and November, before the Harmattan season sets in by December.”

Mr. Porturphy also emphasised the importance of preparing for the rains.

“Now is the time to ensure that gutters are cleared, especially those that are blocked. If there are any structures on railway lines, they need to be removed. We must also stop throwing rubbish in gutters, as they are already narrowed,” he advised.

“Currently, our forecast is 80% accurate. When we issue a warning, it means we’ve observed similar conditions elsewhere and predict that they will occur at this time, “he concluded,
