The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) says it is engaging relevant stakeholders to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged assault of a journalist by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, the General Secretary of the GJA, Dominic Hlodzi, said the Association’s attention has been drawn to the incident and preliminary engagements are currently underway to determine what exactly transpired.
“The attention of the GJA has been drawn to the incident, and what we are doing presently is engaging to understand what really happened. Tomorrow afternoon, we will hold a press conference to properly address the assault issue,” he stated.
The development follows reports that a journalist with the Class Media Group was allegedly assaulted by officers of the Ghana National Fire Service while covering events at the Kasoa New Market.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the journalist was filming a confrontation between firefighters and traders at the market, shortly after a recent fire outbreak in the area.
The incident has sparked concern within media circles, with calls for accountability and the protection of journalists in the lawful discharge of their duties.
