Peter Martey Agbeko

The Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Elections Committee, Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko, has reassured members of the association and the general public that all preparations for the upcoming national and regional elections are on course to deliver a credible, transparent, and fair process.

The elections are scheduled to take place nationwide on Monday, June 30, 2025. Mr. Agbeko stated that the committee, working under the technical guidance of an advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana, is fully committed to upholding democratic best practices throughout the exercise.

In a statement issued ahead of the elections, Mr. Agbeko addressed growing concerns about the introduction of proxy voting and allegations of a bloated voter register, describing them as unfounded and lacking evidence.

He noted that proxy voting is a legitimate and globally accepted electoral practice, and emphasised that the committee has implemented strict measures to prevent abuse of the system.

“It is unfortunate when people project their own standards onto others and seek to create doubt without presenting verifiable facts,” he said.

“Credible concerns are welcome and will be addressed on their merit, but attempts to derail the process based on emotion and suspicion must be discouraged.”

Recalling his experience as secretary of the 2021 GJA Elections Committee, Mr. Agbeko highlighted the team’s ability to deliver a successful election despite the abrupt resignation of the then-chairman just days before the polls.

He reaffirmed his commitment to staying the course and ensuring a smooth electoral process.

“With just a week to the polls, let me be clear: this Chairman is not going anywhere. I intend to see this process through—faithfully, professionally, and to the glory of God and the service of our Association,” he said.

The committee is scheduled to meet all candidates Tuesday evening in a bid to foster transparency, unity, and professionalism ahead of the elections.

The Elections Committee urged all stakeholders to support efforts to maintain the integrity of the GJA and safeguard its democratic processes.
