The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has issued a firm condemnation of the recent attack on JoyNews reporter Latif Iddrisu, describing it as an affront to press freedom, democratic governance, and the right of citizens to be informed.

Addressing the media in Accra, Mr Dwumfour declared, “The Ghana Journalists Association vehemently condemns the unacceptable attack on our brother and colleague Latif. This egregious act of violence against a journalist in the line of duty is a direct assault on press freedom, democratic principles and the fundamental rights of citizens to be informed”

“The GJA stands in solidarity with Latif Iddrisu and Multimedia, and assures him and his media house of our full support,” he continued.

Background: The EOCO Incident

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.

Mr Iddrisu, a journalist with JoyNews, was covering the appearance of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako—commonly known as Chairman Wontumi—when he was assaulted by unknown individuals believed to be party supporters.

Mr Iddrisu was targeted while carrying out his professional duties and suffered physical abuse at the scene. He was later given medical attention and filed an official complaint.

Commendation for Police Action

In addition to his condemnation of the assault, Mr Dwumfour praised the Ghana Police Service and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, for their swift action in arresting a suspect linked to the attack.

“The GJA would like to commend the Ghana Police Service and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohunu, for the swift response and the subsequent arrest of a suspect in connection with the deplorable incident,” Mr Dwumfour said.

“This action sends a strong signal that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated and that the rule of law will always prevail,” he added.

Mr Dwumfour reiterated the GJA’s commitment to fighting impunity and crimes against journalists, and called on state institutions to ensure that those who attack media professionals face the full rigour of the law.
