The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has appealed to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior to support its plans to fully digitise its operations nationwide.

This call was made by the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Basintale Amadu, during a visit by the committee to the Service’s headquarters in Accra. The visit was led by the Committee Chairman and MP for Builsa North, James Agalga.

“Together, we are sure this august committee will help us to move GIS to the next level, especially as we gear up to fully digitise all our processes and border controls,” Mr. Amadu highlighted.

He explained that a short presentation had been prepared to brief the committee on the current state of the Service, its key challenges, and the opportunities ahead.

The visit formed part of the committee’s oversight role and provided a platform for open dialogue between Parliament and the Service. Mr. Agalga, in his remarks, said the committee needed to be updated on developments within the GIS to carry out its mandate effectively.

“There have been new developments. New successes have been chalked. Some new challenges have emerged. We need to be apprised of your successes, your challenges, so that as the committee with oversight responsibility, we see how we can partner with you, support you to accomplish your mission and goals,” he said.

“So this is a friendly visit. Feel free to open up. Tell us what we need to know. And then we’ll carry the message back to Parliament,” he added.

The GIS has been seeking to modernise its systems and improve efficiency across its operations, especially in border control and internal administration. The leadership believes digitisation will play a key role in strengthening the Service’s capacity and responsiveness.

The engagement with the committee is seen as a step toward securing the institutional and political support needed to push these reforms forward.
