Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy, the chairperson for the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ghana has urged girls to dream big and break barriers.

She said this during the 20th Anniversary celebration of the Diaspora Girls’ Senior High School, a school founded by the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ghana Chapter on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Chaired by Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy, the occasion had in attendance the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Francisca Oteng Mensah, representing the Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana as the guest speaker, O. B Amoah, MP for Akuapem South and Minister of State for the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development.

Others included members of FAWE Ghana Chapter, representatives from the National, Regional, and District offices of the Ghana Education Service, members of CHASS, traditional rulers, parents of students and other distinguished guests.

The anniversary celebration began with the unveiling of a bust of the late Mrs. Vida Amaadi Yeboah, founding member of the Forum for African Women Educationalists and former coordinator and chairperson of the Ghana Chapter, in appreciation of her contribution to the establishment of the school.

In a goodwill message from the FAWE Ghana Chapter, authored by Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy, she acknowledged the traditional leaders and elders of Obodan, where the school is located, for the role they played in helping the vision to create a safe space where girls could flourish and advance their educational prospects come into fruition.

She indicated that the school has, over the years, nurtured and educated generations of young women who have become leaders, innovators, and competent professionals in various fields.

“The school has been an educational institution with a difference; it has been a haven where girls have been encouraged to dream big, break barriers, and shatter stereotypes.”

She showed gratitude to the staff, past and present, for their commitment to seeing to the success of the school and students and their families for entrusting us with their education and supporting FAWE’s vision wholeheartedly.

She also thanked the Ghana Education Service for the interest shown in the Diaspora Girls’ Senior High School and for accepting to absorb the school at a critical moment.

She urged the school and its stakeholders to look to the future with excitement and determination as FAWE Ghana Chapter is committed to building a nurturing environment for empowering the Girl Child to strive for higher educational laurels.

The colourful occasion saw a well-coordinated parade by the school’s cadet, a display of culture through a choreographed dance and songs from the school’s choir amidst applause from guests.

FAWE Ghana Chapter gave awards to students, patrons, and FAWE Girls’ Club executives who had distinguished themselves.

FAWE Ghana Chapter also presented the Omankrado Hemmaa of Obodan Nana Aboamah Oforiwah 1 (Emily Odei) with special recognition and honour for her contribution over the years to the activities of the FAWE Ghana Chapter and the establishment of the school in Obodan during the period where she was the assemblywoman of the Obadan Electoral Area.
