GIFF holds 28th AGM ON digital transformation in freight forwarding

The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) has held its 28th Annual General Meeting in Koforidua, focusing on the rapid evolution of technology in the logistics and freight forwarding industry.

This year’s AGM was held under the theme “Digital Transformation in Freight Forwarding: Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Service Delivery.”

Delivering a key note address, the Commissioner of the Customs Division of the GRA, Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan, lauded GIFF for its cooperation, professionalism and consistent advocacy, which he said have contributed immensely to customs transformation and a more conducive trading environment.

He urged GIFF members to fully support the government’s 24-hour economic policy, which has already taken root at Ghana’s ports.
“By aligning your services with this policy, we can jointly reduce congestion, enhance competitiveness and position Ghana as a preferred trade and logistics hub within the subregion,” he said.

Brigadier General Annan stressed that revenue mobilization remains critical to national development and highlighted the importance of compliance in declarations and documentation.

He called on freight forwarders to uphold the highest levels of professionalism and integrity as systems continue to digitize.
“Digital transformation is no longer optional; it is the backbone of modern trade,” he underscored.

The President of GIFF and Vice President of FIATA, Mr. Stephen Adojatcher, announced that the next 12 months will mark a period of significant digital transformation, one he described as a strategic necessity rather than a choice.

He noted that emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, digital documentation, automated customs processes, and predictive analytics will soon become standard tools for freight forwarders.
“Our operational models must evolve to meet the expectations of clients who demand speed, transparency and accuracy,” he emphasized.

Mr. Adojatcher reaffirmed GIFF’s commitment to advocating for a harmonized national logistics digitization ecosystem, one that eliminates duplicated processes, minimizes system inefficiencies, and strengthens revenue assurance.

He further revealed that the GIFF Research Hub will be revitalized to produce structured research and support evidence-based advocacy. The Hub will collaborate closely with academia, Customs, port authorities, and international partners to improve the national clearance system.

“The Hub will become the beating heart of our forward movement, the place where ideas are tested, problems diagnosed, and solutions scientifically crafted,” he stated.

The AGM also featured solidarity messages from key stakeholders, including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Ghana Link Network Services, and sister associations such astheCustoms House Brokers Association of Ghanaand theAssociation of Customs House Agents Ghana.
