Ghana’s growing influence in regional volleyball was firmly underlined following the impressive performances of Ghana Army Volleyball Club and Kalibi Volleyball Club at the 2026 CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship, hosted at the Borteyman Sports Complex from 1st to 10th March, 2026.

The championship, staged in Accra, brought together 32 top volleyball clubs from seven West African countries, marking a historic level of participation in African club volleyball.

The tournament showcased high-quality competition while highlighting the steady growth of the sport in Ghana.

On the court, Ghanaian clubs dominated the competition. Ghana Army Volleyball Club secured the men’s title after defeating Nigeria Customs Volleyball Club in straight sets (25–21, 25–21, 25–23).

In the women’s division, Kalibi Volleyball Club delivered a commanding performance, beating Vipers Volleyball Club of Nigeria 3–0 (25–15, 25–16, 25–13) to claim the championship.

The tournament also received strong support from the Government of Ghana and key sporting institutions. Professor Francis Dodoo attended on behalf of the Chief of Staff, while the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, was present to show government support for the sport.

Other dignitaries included the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, and the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. Senior officers and generals from various Ghanaian security services also attended to grace the occasion and demonstrate their support for the championship.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, commended the progress made by Ghana volleyball and highlighted the government’s commitment to sustainable sports development through the Sports Fund.

“We are impressed with the exploits of Ghana volleyball. It is the President’s commitment to meaningfully support the growth of all sports in the country, which is why the Sports Fund was established to provide sustainable support for sports development,” said Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams.

Despite these successes, stakeholders emphasize that greater corporate investment will be critical to sustaining volleyball’s growth. Increased sponsorship, stronger club support, and expanded grassroots development are essential to help Ghana consistently compete at the highest levels in Africa.

With improving infrastructure, a rising pool of talented players, and successful international competitions such as the Zone III Championship, Ghana is steadily positioning itself as one of the emerging powerhouses of volleyball in West Africa.
