Ghana’s Koogo Atia wins men’s 42km as Kenya’s Nancy Githaiga claim women’s title at 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon

Ghana’s Koogo Atia and Kenya’s Nancy Githaiga claimed top honours at the 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon, leading a strong field of elite runners in the 42km race through the streets of Accra.

Koogo Atia emerged winner of the men’s 42km race, earning GHS15,000 for his effort. He was followed by fellow Ghanaians Seidu Salifu, who came second and received GHS10,000, and Richard Kweitu, who finished third in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 9 seconds, taking home GHS8,000.

In the women’s 42km, Kenya’s Nancy Githaiga secured first place and walked away with GHS30,000. Ghana’s Ayaaba Joyce finished second with GHS10,000, while Mariama Aidoo placed third and received GHS8,000.

The 10km mass participation races also saw impressive performances by Ghanaian athletes.

In the men’s 10km, Afful Basit clinched first place and GHS2,000, followed by Arthur Ishmael with GHS1,000, and David Nakousi, who finished third with GHS800.

For the women’s 10km, Anane Jennifer led the pack, winning GHS2,000. She was followed by Braimah Rabiatu in second place with GHS1,000, and Nafisatu Mohammed, who placed third and earned GHS800.

The 2025 edition of the Absa Black Star Marathon drew athletes from 28 countries, further cementing its reputation as one of West Africa’s premier long-distance running events.
