Ghana’s national beach soccer team, the Black Sharks, have taken a commanding step towards qualifying for the 2024 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a spirited 5-3 triumph over Côte d’Ivoire in the first leg of their qualifier.

Their determination was palpable, inspiring all who witnessed their performance.

Played at the Emancipation Beach Arena in Keta on Sunday (21 July), the match saw Ghana dominate large portions of the game. Alfred Kwame Torsu opened the scoring early in the sixth minute, followed by a brace from Wise Nyamadi to extend Ghana’s lead. Côte d’Ivoire managed to pull one goal back before the end of the first period.

The second period was more evenly contested, with Ghana unable to capitalize on further opportunities. However, the Black Sharks regained momentum in the final period, with Ticor Kini netting twice to secure a decisive advantage.

Despite two late goals from Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana’s lead proved insurmountable. Head coach Daniel Neequaye Kotey, ever the strategist, cautioned against complacency ahead of the second leg in Abidjan next Saturday (27 July). His words serve as a reminder that the game is not won until the final whistle.

“We must maintain focus and discipline,” Kotey emphasized. “Our job isn’t finished yet. We must replicate today’s performance and remain united as a team.”
