The Board of Directors of the Arlington Sister City Association (ASCA) has announced the appointment of Ghanaian youth leader, Ebenezer Nii Martey, as a Member-at-Large of the Association’s Board.
He currently serves as a Senior Programmes Manager at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in Washington, D.C.
Mr Martey brings extensive experience in global strategic engagement, governance, programme management, marketing, and digital communications to the Board.
Announcing the appointment, Chair of the ASCA Board, Daphne Lathouras, said the Association was pleased to welcome him to its leadership.
“We are excited to welcome Eben to our Board of Directors. His experience in global strategic engagement, governance, programme management, marketing and social media will enhance ASCA’s international profile and strengthen professional, youth, and educational programmes for the citizens of Arlington and our sister cities.
As a volunteer-run organisation, Eben’s hands-on work in process optimisation, stakeholder engagement, and building effective frameworks will be a valuable asset to ASCA,” she stated.
Ebenezer Nii Martey is a distinguished Ghanaian leader widely recognised for his work in youth development and strategic governance across Africa. He is an alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Culture, Tourism and Hospitality.
His leadership journey began earlier at Accra Academy and deepened at KNUST, where he rose through several student leadership roles, including President of the Tourism Students Association, Majority Leader of the KNUST Students’ Parliament, and ultimately Speaker of the KNUST Students’ Parliament.
During this period, he was noted for transforming student advocacy and elevating civic engagement while proudly projecting Ghanaian identity.
Mr. Martey later served as Chairperson of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Ghana Youth Advisory Panel.
He was nominated to represent Ghana at the Commonwealth Youth Parliament of Africa in Malawi, where he served as Deputy Speaker and later as Speaker.
These experiences helped shape his global outlook and advocacy for young people and marginalised groups across the continent.
Building on his pan-African vision, he became a co-founder and lead planner of the Annual Youth Education and Empowerment Summit (AYEESummit), an international platform focused on developing practical solutions and projects for young Africans, rather than rhetoric.
Mr. Martey now brings this experience to ASCA, an organisation dedicated to citizen diplomacy and fostering international connections between Arlington, Virginia, and cities around the world.
Beginning in 2025, he is expected to apply his expertise in organisational governance and process optimisation to strengthen ASCA’s partnerships and operational effectiveness.
ASCA promotes Arlington’s global engagement through educational, commercial, and cultural exchanges with sister cities, including Aachen in Germany and Coyoacán in Mexico.
His record of service as a trusted adviser to national and international boards, including the UNFPA Youth Advisory Panel in Ghana and the American Pharmacists Association, as well as his leadership in global systems improvement — notably the establishment of a centralised global governance system for staff across more than 70 countries during his tenure at PATH — positions him to make a substantial contribution to advancing ASCA’s mission.
