Ghanaian food vendors urged to formalise operations

Director of Licensing and Regulations at the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC), John Oletey Otuteye, has urged indigenous food vendors to register their businesses to tap into the rapidly expanding digital food delivery economy.

He encouraged vendors to formalise their operations and partner with licensed digital platforms to widen their customer base and fully participate in the online marketplace.

Mr Otuteye gave the advice at the Bolt Food 5th Anniversary Awards Ceremony held in Accra.

He noted that changing food consumption patterns—driven by urbanisation, busy schedules, and the demand for convenience—had increased reliance on online food ordering and delivery services in major cities.

The event, themed “Beyond Delivery: Honouring 5 Years of Progress & Partnership,” brought together regulatory partners, restaurant and retail partners, courier fleet members, and operators.

Mr Otuteye assured vendors of a flexible and supportive licensing regime designed to promote private investment and participation in the courier and delivery sector.

He added that vendors who registered would benefit from secure, trackable delivery logistics within a regulated system that prioritises consumer safety.

According to him, digital platforms operated by companies such as Bolt enhance consumer trust and help build a sustainable ecosystem for local food vendors.

He further highlighted the growth of the gig economy, driven by platform-based delivery services like Bolt.

“The operations of Bolt Food Ghana have revolutionised the courier sector, offering thousands of jobs to young people in this country,” he said.

General Manager of Bolt Food Ghana, John Oletey Otuteye, outlined the platform’s progress since its launch in November 2020.

He cited milestones including geographical expansion across Accra and Kumasi, the introduction of 24/7 delivery in parts of Accra, integration of mobile money payments, and the scaling-up of retail and grocery delivery.

“When we talk about the success of Bolt Food, it is our restaurant partners at the centre of it. They are the ones who bring the platform to life,” Mr Zaria stated.

Major restaurants active in food delivery services were recognised for their achievements.

Barcelos and Pizzavella received the Chain Excellence Award for outstanding operational standards and brand execution.

Oliver Twist Shack was honoured with the Partner Longevity Award for its enduring partnership.

Chrismaison (Chris Maisin) received the Sustained Growth Award for consistent expansion, while Mayford was presented with the Collaborative Excellence Award for exceptional partnership.
