Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has denounced the violence that marred the July 11 Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, urging Ghanaians to break cycles of electoral hostility.
In a July 13 Facebook statement, she congratulated National Democratic Congress candidate Ewurabena Aubynn’s “decisive victory” while condemning attacks on journalists and observers during the poll.
“We witnessed unfortunate incidents… While it’s good to be interested in our country’s direction, we should not allow passion to devolve into violence,” Opoku-Agyemang stated. She emphasized that “human life is precious,” calling for elections to become “orderly and even ordinary events.” The Vice President’s intervention follows verified reports of assaults, including on a GHOne TV journalist and former New Patriotic Party official Hawa Yakubu, despite deployment of 100 police officers per polling station.
The rerun – resolving disputes from December 2024’s general election – saw widespread allegations of vote-buying and physical confrontations across 19 polling stations. Opoku-Agyemang’s appeal for tolerance responds to escalating political rhetoric, including Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George’s renewed demands for justice regarding his 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon assault and NPP legislator Sammi Awuku’s accusations of selective outrage.
Cross-party condemnations have emerged, though investigations into specific incidents remain ongoing. The violence underscores persistent security challenges in Ghana’s electoral processes despite constitutional safeguards. The Vice President’s statement aligns with the Mahama administration’s pledge to ensure peaceful transitions as Ghana looks toward 2028 general elections.
