Ghana to receive 300 new ISUZU buses to boost public transport, deputy transport minister confirms

Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Minister of Transport, has announced the final inspection of 300 new ISUZU buses in Egypt, which are set to be delivered to Ghana as part of efforts to modernise the country’s public transport system.

The announcement was made in a Facebook post on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

Affo-Toffey said the initiative reflects the Ministry’s commitment to providing efficient, safe, and reliable transport for Ghanaians.

“The arrival of these buses will significantly expand fleet capacity, improve service coverage, reduce long waiting times, and enhance safety and comfort for commuters,” she wrote.

Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari, on December 10, announced the move, saying the emergency measure is expected to improve safety, reduce long waits, and curb exorbitant fares charged by some private operators.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament, the Minister said the deployment forms part of an immediate response to growing concerns about unreliable evening transport in the capital.

“In practical terms, this intervention will ease the daily burden on workers, students, and traders, help decongest our roads, lower overall transport costs, and contribute to a more orderly and environmentally responsible urban transport system.”

The buses form part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s public transport network, improve urban mobility, and reduce traffic congestion, particularly in major cities.

The delivery is expected to ease pressures on existing fleets and complement ongoing initiatives under the government’s Better Ghana Agenda.

Affo-Toffey expressed gratitude to Minister Bukari Nikpe for his leadership and guidance, noting that the Ministry remains committed to translating policy into practical solutions that benefit the public.

The Ministry has also emphasised that these new buses will support environmentally sustainable urban transport and promote inclusivity by providing improved access to safe and affordable commuting options across the country.
