The Ghana Tug of War Association (GHATOWA) will hold an inter-schools championship on August 2 at Mamfe Methodist Girls SHS, featuring 20 senior high schools competing for national bragging rights and the chance to represent Ghana at the 2026 Africa Championship.
The event doubles as an honors ceremony for Ghana’s recent continental medalists in the sport.
GHATOWA President Emmanuel Olla Williams announced the competition will recognize Akroso Sectech’s bronze medal performance at the 2024 Zimbabwe championship and Mamfe Methodist Girls’ haul of two silver and three bronze medals from the 2025 South Africa tournament. The association will also honor 50 corporate entities, media partners, and educational leaders for supporting school sports development.
“This strength festival expects over 15,000 spectators as schools battle on the rope from 9am to 4pm,” Williams stated, framing the event as both a selection process for international representation and a celebration of Ghana’s growing prowess in the sport. The championship continues Ghana’s efforts to institutionalize tug of war in secondary schools since its formal adoption by the Ghana Education Service in 2021.
