Ghana and the Russian Federation have held a technical session of political consultations in Accra to review the state of their bilateral relations and explore new opportunities for cooperation.

The meeting, held on March 12, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, brought together senior officials from both countries to assess progress in existing partnerships and identify areas for deeper collaboration.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, March 14, it said Ghana’s delegation was led by the Director of the Europe Bureau, Eric Owusu-Boateng, while the Russian delegation was headed by the Director of the Department of African States, Anatoly Bashkin.

Opening the session, the Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs at the ministry, Harold Adlai Agyeman, said the relationship between the two countries has grown steadily over the past 68 years.

He noted that the partnership has been anchored on trust, mutual respect, and solidarity, sustained through political dialogue, economic cooperation, educational exchanges, and collaboration within multilateral platforms.

The Ministry said during the discussions, both sides reviewed bilateral trade and explored opportunities for cooperation in sectors including agriculture, industrial development, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, and technology transfer.

They also emphasised the need to expand partnerships between universities in areas such as science, engineering, technology, and medicine. The two countries further discussed cooperation in energy diversification, technical and vocational education, and capacity building.

The delegations assessed existing cooperation frameworks and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing outstanding bilateral agreements while strengthening ties through sustained diplomatic engagement.

On regional and multilateral matters, the statement further said both sides exchanged views on developments in the Sahel region and preparations for the Third Russia–Africa Summit scheduled for October 2026.

Following the consultations, the head of the Russian delegation paid a courtesy call on the Chief Director of the ministry, Khadija Iddrisu.

During the meeting, Ghana requested Russia’s cooperation in holding a Russian citizen accountable for the non-consensual publication of explicit images of Ghanaian women. Russia assured Ghana of its cooperation in addressing the matter.

The Ministry noted that Ghana also raised concerns about reports of Ghanaian youth being enlisted in Russia’s ongoing military operations. Both sides agreed to work together to address the issue.

The two parties expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the consultations and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations between Ghana and Russia.
