In the wake of the devastating floods caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage, the Ghana Red Cross Society has stepped up its efforts to provide essential relief to displaced families.

Recognizing the urgent need for shelter, the organization swiftly deployed 100 emergency shelter kits to alleviate the mounting pressure at evacuation centres, particularly in North Tongu and other affected areas in the region.

The floodwaters, triggered by the Akosombo Dam release, have displaced hundreds of families, leaving them in dire need of basic necessities. The Ghana Red Cross Society, known for its effective disaster response, thus acted to address this pressing humanitarian crisis.

Each of the 100 emergency shelter kits includes essential supplies such as sturdy tents, mosquito net, and other critical items to ensure that the displaced families have a safe and secure place to rest. These kits are designed to offer immediate relief and comfort to those who have lost their homes in this unprecedented natural disaster.

Mr. Jonathan Hope, National Disaster Manager for the Ghana Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of rapid response in such situations.

“Our primary focus is to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the floods. These emergency shelter kits are a critical part of our response strategy, ensuring that families have a secure and dignified place to stay during this challenging time,”he stated.

The deployment of these shelter kits is part of a broader relief effort led by the Ghana Red Cross Society, which includes the distribution of food and non-food items and medical supplies to affected communities.

The organization is working tirelessly alongside local authorities and other humanitarian partners to ensure that those impacted by the floods receive the support they need to begin rebuilding their lives.

The Ghana Red Cross Society said it remains committed to providing ongoing assistance and support to the affected families as the situation continues to evolve, acknowledging that its dedicated efforts stand as a testament to the strength and resilience of communities coming together in the face of adversity.

The National Disaster Manager of the Ghana Red Cross Society, Jonathan Hope, observed that “while the response to the devastating floods in the Volta Region has been heartening, the sheer volume of relief items pouring into evacuation centres has led to unforeseen challenges in distribution. Evacuees, already grappling with the aftermath of the floods, now face the additional hurdle of ensuring fair and efficient allocation of essential supplies.”

“It’s a difficult situation. People have a tremendous amount of donations, which is a testament to the generosity of people. However, ensuring that every evacuee receives what they need in an organized manner has been a real challenge.”

What I witnessed at the St. Kizito evacuation centre highlights instances of confusion and occasional disorder during the distribution process. The high demand for relief items, coupled with limited resources and manpower, has posed logistical difficulties for organizers. I think the sharing of relief items must be well coordinated to ensure a fair and transparent manner for people with disabilities to be treated well and be catered for.”
