Ghana, Qatar move to boost trade, security and skilled labour exchange

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced significant diplomatic and economic gains following an official visit to Qatar at the invitation of the country’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.

In a statement posted on Friday, November 14, the Minister disclosed that Ghana and Qatar have begun firm steps toward strengthening bilateral relations across multiple fronts, including trade, security, visa facilitation, labour mobility, and conflict mediation.

According to Ablakwa, the discussions were extensive and focused on deepening cooperation between the two countries.

“Our fruitful bilateral discussions have focused on forging closer ties, increasing trade, strategic security cooperation and collaborating in conflict mediation as our two countries believe in a multilateral rule-based order anchored on peace and stability,” he noted.

A key highlight of the talks was a mutual commitment to ease visa requirements to boost the movement of people and goods between Accra and Doha. Ablakwa explained that this step is expected to drive business, tourism and logistics opportunities, especially with the already existing direct flights between the two nations.

“Ghana and Qatar have agreed to quickly conclude a labour mobility agreement to open up job opportunities for thousands of skilled young Ghanaians,” he said.

To foster stronger business-to-business linkages and long-term investment partnerships, the two countries will also host a high-level Presidential Ghana–Qatar Business Forum during President John Dramani Mahama’s upcoming visit to Doha next month.

Ablakwa stated that the forum will serve as a platform for both nations to explore trade synergies, investment flows, and private-sector partnerships.

“To create business partnerships and synergies, we both decided to facilitate a Presidential Ghana–Qatar business forum when President John Mahama visits Qatar next month,” he added.

The Minister’s visit marks another step in Ghana’s broader diplomatic push to expand global partnerships, enhance economic prospects, and secure new opportunities for citizens, especially in emerging labour markets.
