New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organizer Sammy Awuku has denounced President John Mahama’s cancellation of fuel allowances for political appointees as a “populist public relations stunt.”

In a media interview, Awuku demanded concrete transparency measures to validate purported cost savings, challenging the government’s fiscal sincerity.

“The directive lacks substance without shutting fuel depots at the Castle and Jubilee House primary sources for officials’ fuel,” Awuku stated. He insisted the government must disclose annual allowance expenditures and define which positions qualify as “political appointees,” noting varied contractual entitlements for CEOs and public servants.

Awuku’s critique follows the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers’ (COPEC) initial praise for the policy, which aims to redirect funds under Mahama’s “Reset Agenda.” He dismissed the move as theatrical without verifiable savings metrics: “Where are the figures? Without them, this is mind games.”
