The Ghana National Association of Motor Riders has sensitised its members and stakeholders on road safety issues and the need to adhere to traffic rules and regulations.

The program which was held in Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality brought hundreds of riders and stakeholders together to engage on better ways to deal with and help reduce road accidents in the country, especially in towns most populated with motor riders.

The event was organised in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, the Director-General of the NRSA, Ing David Osarfo Adonteng, said there is a need for effective and efficient collaboration among all stakeholders to help deal with triggers of road crashes among motor riders.

Ing Adonteng said the intensification of education for motor riders was crucial as records indicate that about 98% of motorbike users suffered severe injuries during accidents.

According to him, there has been an increase in accidents over the years as a result of motorbike usage in the Ketu South Municipality which has resulted in a lot of casualties and needs to be well-addressed.

Meanwhile, the PRO for the Ghana Motor Riders Association, Pascal Setsofia Quarshie, has urged all members of the general public to let go of the negative perception they have of motor riders.

Mr. Quashie advocated for the legalisation and regulation of the business in the country to make it more effective and easy to control.

He said condemning the riders and the business would only make the situation worse.

“It is necessary for the government to help regulate and well monitor the business of motor riding instead of condemning it,” Mr. Quashie said.

The riders who attended the program explained how frustrating it is to survive and take care of their families by riding motorbikes as a profession and business.

They want the government to consider making them part of the transport business in the country.
