Ghana Mineworkers’ Union demand payment of end-of-contract benefits, threaten industrial action

The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has petitioned BCM Ghana Limited, demanding the immediate payment of end-of-contract benefits owed to more than 700 former employees of the company.

In a statement issued by the General Secretary, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, the Union described the unpaid benefits as contractual and statutory entitlements guaranteed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, individual employment contracts, and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

According to Mr Gbana, the workers’ contracts expired over 10 months ago, yet BCM Ghana Limited has failed to settle the outstanding obligations.

“This prolonged delay has subjected our members and their families to extreme financial hardship, distress, and untold suffering, contrary to principles of fairness, good faith, and responsible corporate conduct,” he said.

“The continued non-payment of these benefits constitutes a blatant breach of agreement and a violation of the rights of our members, many of whom depended solely on these entitlements to transition into alternative livelihoods.”

The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union further revealed that it has made several attempts to resolve the matter through dialogue and formal correspondence with management, but these engagements have not produced any concrete results.

The Union said it has exercised patience and restraint in good faith, but the situation has now become untenable.

“Accordingly, we hereby demand that all outstanding End-of-Contract Benefits owed to the affected workers be paid in full on or before Friday, 19th December 2025.

“Take notice that failure to comply with this demand within the stated period will leave the Union and its members with no option than to embark on much stiffer industrial and lawful actions to press home our demands and protect the rights and dignity of our members,” the Union added.
