Ghana Armed Forces opens 2025/2026 intake for military academy

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has officially opened applications for the 2025/2026 intake into the Ghana Military Academy (GMA), announcing full requirements for prospective candidates seeking careers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The recruitment drive is targeting highly qualified individuals for various specialised officer roles, with online submissions running until the deadline of Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

Eligibility and Core Requirements

The official notice emphasises strict eligibility criteria for all applicants:

  • Citizenship and Character: Only Ghanaian citizens by birth are eligible, and applicants must be of good character.
  • Physical and Medical Standards: Candidates must be medically fit in line with GAF standards and be able to pass the pre-joining fitness assessment.
  • Marital Status and Age (Regular Officer Cadet): Applicants for the Regular Officer Cadet course must be unmarried, not bonded, and must be between 18 and 26 years old by March 31, 2026.
  • Height Requirements: The minimum height requirement remains 1.68m (5’6”) for males and 1.60m (5’2”) for females. Higher standards apply for specialist units like the Military Police.

GAF has stressed that academic results must be genuine and verifiable.

Applicants must possess six credits at BECE, WASSCE, or SSSCE, including English, Mathematics, and Science, or an equivalent combination of GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels.

Crucially, the notice stressed that “transcripts or attestations will not be accepted at the documentation stage,” underscoring the requirement for original certificates. Most specialist roles require a first degree not below Second Class Lower from an accredited institution.

Diverse Career Paths and Specialist Roles

The GAF is seeking expertise across all three services, offering a wide array of career paths:

1. Ghana Army (Regular Career Officer Course):

The Army is recruiting for roles including Infantry, Armour, Artillery, Signals and Communications, Engineering, Ordnance, Supply and Transport, Physical Training, the Education Corps, Records, Agricultural Extension, the Army Band, Public Relations, the Pay Corps, and Catering.

  • Engineering and Technical: Positions demand qualifications in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic, Instrumentation, Cyber Security, Telecommunications, Logistics, and other applied science fields. Additional certifications in areas such as drone piloting, network engineering, and ethical hacking will offer a competitive advantage.
  • Short Service Commission (SSC): Options are available for candidates with master’s degrees and professional registrations, particularly in engineering, logistics, signals, and technical services.

2. Ghana Navy:

The Navy is inviting applications for Executive, Technical, Supply, Administration, Education, Agricultural Extension, Records, Public Relations, Band, Catering, and Pay Corps roles. Preference will be given to candidates with technical, scientific, and maritime-related training or professional certifications.

3. Ghana Air Force:

The Air Force is recruiting for Operations, Engineering, Supply, Administration, Ordnance, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Public Relations, Education, Band, Catering, and Physical Training. Required degrees include physics, mathematics, aerospace studies, mechanical and electrical engineering, aviation technology, and related fields. Holders of CPL or ATPL licences will be at a competitive advantage.

Healthcare and Religious Professionals

The recruitment drive also extends to essential non-combat specialised fields, which carry higher age limits:

  • Healthcare: Applications are open for professionals in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Allied Health Sciences, Psychology, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Biomedical Science, Audiology, Speech Therapy, and Environmental Health. These categories have age limits ranging from 30 to 40 years, and applicants must be duly registered with their relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Religious Officers: Chaplains and Imams must possess a first degree in Theology or Islamic Studies, have formal ordination or recognized religious authority, and demonstrate pastoral experience. Applicants must be fluent in English and at least one major Ghanaian language.

Application Procedure

To begin the application process, prospective candidates must purchase an electronic voucher for GH₵250 from designated Post Offices nationwide. GAF urged applicants to follow the requirements meticulously and submit applications before the closing deadline.

The closing date for all online submissions is Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
