Ghana and Nigeria lead medal tally at 2025 JE Wilson Ghana Junior International Badminton Championships

The JE Wilson Ghana Junior International 2025 badminton championships concluded in spectacular fashion on Sunday at the Borteyman Sports Complex, with Ghana and Nigeria dominating the medal table at the U-19 finals.

The final day featured five exciting finals: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Although Ghana had swept five of six gold medals at the U-15 level earlier in the tournament, they narrowly missed matching that dominance at the U-19 level but still delivered a strong showing.

Ghana’s first gold at the U-19 level came in women’s doubles, where the formidable pair of Moslena Ama Koramah Adu and Rachael Quarcoo defeated Egypt’s Karma Elghandour and Salma Salah Edin convincingly.

Their flawless teamwork and precision earned them the top podium spot.

The host nation struck gold again in the mixed doubles category, as national champion Obapomba Adu Mintah teamed up with his twin sister, Moslena Ama Koramah Adu, to overcome fellow Ghanaians Francis Obeng and Rachael Quarcoo in an all-Ghanaian final.

Nigeria, however, asserted its strength in the men’s events. Saidu Aliyu won the men’s singles final after a tough battle against compatriot Aderinola Samuel. The duo then joined forces to clinch the men’s doubles gold, highlighting Nigeria’s emerging badminton prowess.

At the awards ceremony, Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Akpokavi lauded the sport’s rapid growth in Ghana.

“Watching these young athletes perform at such a high level is truly inspiring,” he remarked. “With sustained investment, Olympic success is within reach.”

Ghana Badminton Federation President Evans Yeboah echoed this praise, congratulating all players for their outstanding efforts throughout the championships.

The 2025 Ghana Grand Slam continues with senior-level competitions scheduled until August 17, promising more thrilling badminton action in the coming days.
