Motorists who use the N1 Highway, popularly known as the George Bush Highway, should brace for intermittent traffic disruptions over the coming months as work progresses on the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge.

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) says the disruptions will mainly occur during weekends and public holidays, when key construction activities are scheduled to take place, in a bid to reduce the impact on weekday traffic.

The development follows an earlier attempt to close the Accra–Madina lane on Monday, March 9, to allow contractors to undertake critical construction works linked to the project. The diversion, however, resulted in severe congestion along the busy corridor, leaving thousands of motorists trapped in gridlock for several hours and forcing contractors to suspend the closure.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 13, 2026, the authority announced a revised traffic management plan designed to minimise the disruption while allowing work on the project to continue.

Under the new arrangement, northbound traffic from Accra towards Madina will be temporarily closed during T-beam launching operations, with each closure expected to last between two and four hours.

The exercise is scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 14, and will be carried out only on weekends and official public holidays over a four-month period.

To maintain traffic flow during the operations, the southbound carriageway from Madina to Accra will be reconfigured. Instead of the usual four lanes in one direction, two lanes will be assigned to each direction, allowing vehicles to move both ways while work proceeds.

The Ghana Highway Authority has also mapped out alternative routes to help motorists bypass the construction zone and ease pressure on the N1 corridor.

Drivers travelling from Liberation Road towards Tema have been advised to use the Airport Bypass to Flowerpot Junction before merging onto the Motorway to Tema.

Motorists heading from Liberation Road to East Legon are encouraged to pass through the Airport Bypass and use the East Legon Underpass to reach their destination.

Those moving from J.J. Rawlings Road to Liberation Road through the George Bush Highway should turn at Gulf House towards the GIMPA Road, proceed to the Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction and then continue along the George Bush Highway past Villagio to Liberation Road.

For drivers travelling from Tema towards Liberation Road, the recommended route is to continue along the N1 through the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to the Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction, turn left onto North Airport Road past the Africa Regent Hotel and then join Liberation Road.

The authority said the alternative routes were designed to minimise delays, enhance safety and ensure smoother traffic movement during the construction period.

It urged motorists to avoid the immediate work area where possible, obey traffic signs and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and count on the cooperation of the public,” the statement said.
