The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has finally responded, nearly 48 hours after violent scenes disrupted a Ghana Premier League clash between Basake Holy Stars and Nations FC.
The match, played on Sunday at the Ampain Arena, descended into chaos when Nations FC walked off the pitch in protest of a second penalty awarded against them.
They were already trailing 1-0, having earlier conceded a first-half spot kick. The decision sparked a large-scale melee, leading to the abandonment of the fixture.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the GFA acknowledged the disturbing incidents and confirmed that an investigation is underway.
“The Association has commenced a thorough investigation into the reported incidents,” the statement read in part.
The governing body also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline and fairness in domestic competitions.
“The GFA wishes to assure all stakeholders, including clubs, players, match officials, supporters, and the general public, that it remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the game and will deal with all issues arising from this matter expeditiously and decisively.”
The statement concluded with a call for cooperation from all parties involved and promised further communication once investigations progress.
Without the result of the abandoned game, Nations FC are still joint second in the Ghana Premier League with 60 points, the same as Bibiani GoldStars.
