GFA Foundation

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has revealed it does not have a dedicated source of funding for the GFA Foundation but will use portions of funds received from FIFA, CAF and other sponsors as annual subvention to sustain the charity wing of the association.

This was revealed by the Communications Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum, in an interview with Kumasi-based Luv Fm.

The GFA on Tuesday unveiled a fine-member Board of Trustees to manage the GFA Foundation during the official launch of the association’s charity wing in Accra.

The Board will be headed by a Director who will be in charge of the day-to-day management of the Foundation.

Daniel Awuah-Darko, a chartered insurer is the Chairman, with Isaac Osei Yeboah, Finance and Development Manager, Asante Gold and President of Bibiani Gold Stars as the Vice Chairman.

The rest of the members are Sylvia Owusu Ankomah, Corporate Relations Director, Diageo -Guinness Ghana PLC, Frederick Acheampong, GFA Executive Council Member and Ghana football legend, former Black Stars Player and owner of Glo-Lamp Football Academy, Nii Odartey Lamptey.

According to the football governing body in Ghana, the Foundation has the aim of reaching out to the needy, touching lives, giving back to society and most importantly focusing on the welfare of industry players.

The Foundation will also undertake corporate social responsibility activities – develop communities with special focus on health and education, provide assistance to underprivileged people and groups where donations will be made to orphanages and also, drill boreholes in communities.

The news of the charity foundation has thrilled the football community in the country, however, questions about funding sources have been posted.

FA spokesperson, Henry Asante Twum, in an interview with Luv Fm, said plans are far advanced to use proceeds from FIFA/CAF and sponsorship money as annual subvention, though he admitted, there is no specific source of funding for this project.

“We thought about this thoroughly before we came out.

“Truth is that yes at the moment, we do not have the specific source but we have decided to use proceeds from sponsorship and some of the monies we receive from FIFA & CAF; percentages of those monies that we receive from FIFA and CAF as annual subvention.

“Also going forward, negotiations we will have with our partners for sponsorship will be the main source of funding,” he said.

He added, the Board that has been put in place to manage the project will advise the GFA Executive Council on matters of funding.

“Because we have a board in place, the decision is that the board, which is made up of five top quality individuals, would also have to advise the Executive Council in terms of what we can do to get funds to oil or lubricate the foundation,” he added.
