GES shuts down violence-hit schools, assures safety measures ahead of WASSCE

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the temporary closure of schools affected by recent violent incidents in the Upper East Region.

The schools, including Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS, experienced tragic events that claimed student lives, caused injuries, and led to significant property damage.

The violent attacks, which took place between July 20 and 26, have deeply disrupted academic activities and left students, families, and staff distressed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, GES described the attacks as “tragic” and “condemned in no uncertain terms” the violence targeted at the institutions.

“GES expresses its sincerest condolences to the bereaved families and affected school communities. We stand with them in this difficult moment and assure them of our full support,” part of the statement read.

To ensure the safety of life and property, GES has officially closed all affected schools while assessments and emergency measures are put in place.

The statement said GES is working with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and local school leadership to allow SHS 3 students to write the upcoming WASSCE under safe and fair conditions, with special examination centres currently under consideration.

“For SHS 1 and 2 students in the affected schools, the GES is exploring all viable learning avenues to ensure continuity of lessons while campuses remain closed for safety assessments. Further details on these interventions will be communicated in due course,” the GES said.

“In addition, counselling services are being strengthened for both students and staff to help them manage the trauma.”

The Education Service also commended the Ministry of the Interior for evacuating students and pledged continued collaboration with security agencies to protect school communities.

GES called on all stakeholders, including community leaders, parents, and law enforcement, to help preserve peace, discipline, and the sanctity of the country’s educational institutions.
