GES Director requests copy of Joy News' Dark World of BECE documentary, says John Kapi

The Director of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially requested copies of Joy News’s Dark World of BECE documentary.

The documentary exposes corruption in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on September 8, John Kapi explained that the request from the GES is a critical step toward determining the appropriate sanctions for the teachers implicated in the investigation.

He stressed that although WAEC collaborates with the GES during examinations, the council does not have direct authority to discipline teachers.

“The Director General of Ghana Education Service has requested for the videos that were shown,” Mr. Kapi stated.

“I just want to put on record that these are teachers who are not directly under the employment of the West African Examinations Council, and so technically, we would not be able to sanction them, except for the fact that we would ask them to step aside and wouldn’t take part in any of our activities any longer.

“But then for anybody to be able to sanction them appropriately, that will come from the Ghana Education Service.”

His remarks follow the JoyNews Hotline investigation led by GH Probe’s Francisca Enchil, which revealed how officials of the Ghana Education Service, supervisors, headteachers, and invigilators turned the BECE into an organised racket of bribery and collusion.

At Derby Avenue RC Basic School and St. George’s Anglican Basic School in Accra, investigators documented invigilators openly demanding “tokens” of GH¢60 daily, supervisors pocketing envelopes of GHS400, and candidates being asked to contribute to a so-called “Aseda Offertory.”

The revelations have sparked public outrage, with the focus now shifting to how decisively the GES will act once it reviews the incriminating evidence.
