GES condemns shooting incident at Garu D/A School

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed deep regret over a tragic shooting incident at Garu D/A Primary and Junior High School on Monday, 20th October 2025, which resulted in the death of the Headteacher, Mr Bukhari Yahaya.

A deadly shooting left four people, including the headmaster of Garu D/A Basic School, dead.

According to JoyNews Upper East Regional Correspondent Albert Sore, the headmaster was one of the victims fatally shot when armed men opened fire in the community.

In a statement issued on October 22 by GES Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, the education body strongly condemned the violent act, describing it as cruel and unnecessary.

GES emphasised that schools must remain safe environments for teaching and learning, free from brutality and violence.

GES assured the education community in Garu of its unwavering support during this difficult period.

As part of immediate measures, the school has been temporarily closed from Tuesday, 21 October until Monday, 27 October 2025, to allow staff and students time to cope with the trauma.

Additionally, the Guidance and Counselling Unit of the District will provide psychosocial support to help those affected recover.

The Ghana Education Service is also collaborating closely with the District Security Council (DISEC) and other security agencies to ensure safety as investigations into the incident continue.

The public in Garu has been urged to remain calm and support efforts to restore peace within the school environment.

GES reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining secure and nurturing spaces for education across the country.
