The Ghana Boxing Authority’s (GBA) planned elective congress may not see the light of day following a stand-off with the National Sports Authority (NSA).
On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the interim board of the GBA met the NSA leadership to among many things, discuss the roadmap to the elections.
At the meeting, the GBA, led by acting president Roger Barnor, made the case for the elections to be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The GBA’s main concern is that, the current regimes tenure ends on July 22, 2025. If there are no elections before then, there will be a power vacuum.
Per the constitution, the GBA was scheduled to hold its Annual General Meeting in May, before the elective congress in July.
However, the boxing governing body has not held an AGM in five years.
In April, the GBA formally set the wheels in motion for fresh elections, by opening nominations for various positions.
However, the “legitimacy” of that process has been questioned, with members of the current board, insisting that the former president Abraham Kotei Neequaye, acted alone without recourse to the relevant provisions of the constitution.
Members of the then board, have claimed that Kotei Neequaye unilaterally decided the road map for the elections, cost of nominations forms, while singularly determining the list of delegates for the elections.
Consequently, constitutionality and the integrity of the current road map, has been question.
Those sentiments ate shared by Ministry for Sports and Recreation and the NSA, who believe GBA’s operations under the Kotei Neequaye administration, including the election road map he started, ought to be vetted.
Sources have told JoySports that the Ministry and NSA have contemplated setting aside the interim GBA board and install and Interim Management Committee, ostensibly to implement the Amarkai Amartefio Committee’s recommendations before handing over to a new regime.
Businessman Ivan Bruce Cudjoe will challenge Roger Barnor for the GBA presidency. The renowned boxing promoter who managed boxers like Lartey Harrison and Patrick Allotey is also the owner of Travel Matters Ghana, a travel and tour company.
Sources have told JoySports that the NSA will communicate its final decision to the GBA today, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
