Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says residents in his constituency are struggling to access potable water due to the impact of illegal mining.
According to him, many local water sources have been polluted, affecting numerous residents.
Illegal mining has emerged as one of Ghana’s most pressing challenges, resulting in the degradation of farmlands and forest reserves, leaving communities in despair.
Speaking during an event to launch the Young Commons Forum at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Afenyo-Markin observes that the situation in Effutu constituency is particularly dire, despite the government’s claims of combating the menace.
“I think enough of the rhetoric, the situation is real. In my own constituency, we cannot get safe water to drink because of galamsey and I know many people who are going through difficult times because of this,” he lamented.
The Minority Leader urged the ruling party to move beyond mere rhetoric and take proper action to address the crisis, warning that if not addressed, the country could become a hostile place to live.
“Let us fight this together, else there would be no Ghana for us.”
He believes the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has failed to effectively tackle the illegal mining problem, despite its strong desire in opposition.
