Programmes Officer at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Vera Abena Addo, has attributed the struggle against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, to political interference.
Ms Addo said the continued involvement of politicians in the illegal mining chain has undermined efforts to end the menace.
“For me, we have not been able to win this fight also because of the involvement of the politicians,” she said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, November 8.
She stressed that until political actors stop shielding offenders and influencing enforcement agencies, the nation’s attempts to curb galamsey will remain ineffective.
Her comments followed discussions on the recent attack on officials of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).
