Galamsey: I’m going home to 'jealously' protect our rivers – Amoakohene vows after seeing China’s clean waters

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has pledged to intensify efforts to protect the region’s forests and rivers from destruction caused by illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, after being inspired by China’s environmental preservation efforts.

Speaking to journalists at the ongoing International Mayor’s Forum on Tourism in Zhengzhou, Dr. Amoakohene praised the lush greenery and clean rivers in China, saying the visit had strengthened his resolve to safeguard Ghana’s natural environment.

“When I came, I saw how beautiful your rivers are and how green your forests are. I want the same for my country,” he said.

“We have beautiful rivers and forests, but people destroy them through illegal mining.”

He noted that while Ghana welcomes foreign partnerships in mineral exploration, the government would not tolerate illegal activities that degrade the environment.

“Ghana is open for partnership in exploring our minerals. Australia is there with Newmont, South Africa is there through AngloGold — they operate with fewer environmental issues,” he said. “Unfortunately, some Chinese nationals collaborate with locals to mine illegally and spoil our water and forests.”

Dr. Amoakohene stressed that Ghana’s laws protect legitimate investors but warned that those who breach environmental regulations would face prosecution.

“Anyone who wants to come and do it legally, there are laws that support and protect their investment,” he said.

“However, those who do it illegally, we will not spare them. I have been motivated by the sight of your beautiful forests and rivers to go back and jealously protect ours.”

Ghana has been battling widespread illegal mining that has polluted major rivers and destroyed large tracts of forest, prompting a national campaign to restore degraded ecosystems and enforce mining laws.
