From waste to purpose: Prudential Life advances no-plastic-use agenda with plastic recycled desk project

Plastic waste is a growing menace in Ghana, clogging gutters, littering streets, polluting waterways, and silently threatening the health of communities and ecosystems, especially in urban areas. Its impact is far-reaching, contributing to flooding, endangering marine life, and releasing harmful toxins into the soil and air that pose serious health risks.

According to the World Economic Forum, Ghana generates approximately 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, yet only 9.5% is collected for recycling. This leaves hundreds of thousands of tonnes of plastic waste endangering communities and the environment yearly.

In response to this pressing issue, Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, in partnership with Academic City University (ACity) launched the Plastic Recycled Desk Project, an initiative that transforms plastic waste such as bottles and sachets (commonly known as “pure water rubber”) into durable, vibrant, and eco-friendly school desks for underserved communities.

As part of the project, Prudential Life Insurance Ghana donated 100 desks made from recycled plastic waste to Gbegbeyise Basic School in the Greater Accra Region, bringing smiles to students and school management who previously lacked adequate classroom furniture.

At Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, our purpose; “to be partners for every life and protectors for every future,” goes beyond financial protection. It reflects our commitment to a sustainable future by contributing to long-term resilience for our customers, communities, and the economies in which we operate.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Peter Edem Adjei, Chief Operations Officer of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability:

“The investment in plastic recycled desks reiterates our belief that corporate responsibility must go beyond business; it must uplift communities, protect the environment, and inspire progress.”

He narrated the journey thus far; “We started this project as a simple waste segregation program in our office. Then encouraged our staff and agents to bring their plastic waste to be shared for recycling. Before long, it became something bigger. We then partnered Academic City University on ways to transform the plastic waste into something useful, hence these Plastic Recycled Desks.”

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana believes that protecting lives goes beyond insurance policies. It means investing in the future through climate action, education, and innovation. By turning waste into worth, the company is helping build a future where no child is left behind, and no plastic goes to waste.

Tanko Mohammed, Director of Program Management at ACity, commended Prudential Life for taking the bold step to lead in reducing plastic footprint and creating opportunities for academia and industry to collaborate on solving societal challenges. “Education and sustainability go hand in hand. By investing in both, we are investing in the future of Ghana,” he noted.

He also acknowledged Mckingtorch Africa, a social enterprise, for working with ACity students to produce the desks.
