Ghana’s largest food recovery organization, Food for All Africa, celebrates its 10th anniversary by launching a Black Soldier Fly Legacy Project to convert organic waste into animal feed and fertilizer.
The initiative, based at its Ashanti Region warehouse, aims to advance food security while reducing environmental impact through circular agriculture.
Founded in 2015 after CEO Elijah Amoo Addo witnessed street communities sharing discarded food, the organization has since redistributed 5 million kilograms of surplus food -delivering 10 million meals to vulnerable groups. Its programs include the LunchBox school feeding scheme and crisis responses like the COVID-19 Emergency Intervention, which aided 200,000 Ghanaians.
The new project will establish a farming hub in Offinso, leveraging insect-based bioconversion to process waste into high-protein feed and compost. Partnerships with Kenya’s International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) and Australia’s agricultural research agency will support technical training. Six staff members recently completed an ICIPE program on waste-to-feed systems.
“This elevates our mission beyond food recovery to green innovation,” said Programs Manager Caroline Quashie. The organization will launch an August 2025 fundraising drive to scale the facility, incentivizing community participation through a digital rewards system for organic waste contributors.
Addo emphasized collaboration: “Our next decade begins with innovation and inclusion. Let’s feed Ghana sustainably—together.”
