'Five years of impact, shaping tomorrow’s healthcare' as GAB Health Insurance marks anniversary

GAB Health Insurance Company Ltd (GAB Health), a leading private commercial health insurance scheme with majority ownership by the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB), has marked its 5th anniversary with the announcement of major milestones and innovations aimed at shaping the future of healthcare access and delivery in Ghana.

Celebrated under the theme “Five Years of Impact, Shaping Tomorrow’s Healthcare,” the anniversary highlights the scheme’s impressive progress in expanding access to quality healthcare, driving digital innovation in health services, and strengthening governance and service delivery in Ghana’s private health insurance sector.

Speaking at a media engagement session in Accra, the Managing Director, Joseph Abenney-Yeboah, expressed gratitude to stakeholders and noted that GAB Health’s five-year journey has been defined by innovation, resilience, and dedication to providing reliable healthcare support to individuals, families, and corporate institutions across Ghana.

“We set out to create a health insurance scheme that puts people first — one that partners with healthcare providers, supports employers, and stands firmly by our members at their moments of vulnerability. Five years on, we are proud to say we have delivered on that promise,” he said.

Established after extensive feasibility studies commissioned by the Ghana Association of Banks, GAB Health was designed to provide trusted, transparent, and customer-focused healthcare financing supported by robust governance and risk management systems.

Despite being owned by the banking sector, the company has recorded substantial market acceptance beyond banking institutions, enrolling more non-bank clients than banks over the period.

With over 22,000 covered lives, a network of more than 900 healthcare service providers nationwide, and claims payments exceeding GH¢170 million, GAB Health has quickly emerged as a strong player in the industry.

The scheme has also achieved premium growth averaging 87% year-on-year, Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of approximately 218%, Balance sheet growth averaging 153% year-on-year, high member satisfaction and zero provider rejection at point-of-care due to consistent claims settlement and credit worthiness.

These achievements, he noted, reflect the trust reposed in the organisation by clients, the banking industry, regulators, and healthcare provider partners.

Innovation at the Centre of Service Delivery

GAB Health has prioritised technology and value-added services, offering Medical Advisory Services by in-house expert professionals, Chronic Care Management programmes, a telemedicine platform (HealthyKonect), robust data-driven digital and analytical systems, a 24/7 medical support call centre, soon to be enhanced by a virtual AI assistant named Ohenewaa — the first of its kind in Ghana’s health insurance space.

Brand Refresh and the Future Ahead

As part of the anniversary, the company announced a brand refresh initiative to strengthen its corporate identity and enhance clarity in market communication. Under the refreshed brand, the company will operate solely as GAB Health, retiring the earlier name variations (GHIC/GAB) to avoid brand confusion.

The scheme will also formally unveil its new brand identity and AI-assisted service platform at a ceremony scheduled for 28 November 2025 at the Fiesta Royale Hotel, Accra.

Vision for the Next Chapter

Looking ahead, GAB Health aims to expand nationwide and beyond, deepen digital healthcare delivery, introduce more innovative health financing products, and support national efforts towards universal health coverage.

“Our vision is bold yet clear — to become Ghana’s most trusted private health insurance brand, delivering sustainable value and shaping the future of healthcare financing in this country,” the Managing Director stated.
