Bonsu Baah

Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has unveiled his 23-man squad for the Black Stars ahead of the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

Among the fresh faces is Christopher Bonsu Baah, an exciting young talent who plays for Belgian side Genk.

Bonsu’s rise has been remarkable; one of the few Ghanaian players to make a direct move from a second-division side to a European club and thrive. Unlike many of his peers, he did not follow the Right to Dream model.

For most young players, such a transition would have been challenging, but Bonsu has defied the odds.

Here are five facts about the promising talent making his debut for the Black Stars.

  • Sarpsborg 08 Career

Despite starting his football journey with Shooting Stars Academy in Ghana, Bonsu’s breakthrough came when he joined Norwegian side Sarpsborg 08, a move that defined his career at just 18. During his time in the Eliteserien, he led the league with 57 successful dribbles and created 10 scoring opportunities before securing a five-year deal with Genk in 2023.

  • Friendship with Joseph Paintsil

Bonsu shares a close bond with Black Stars winger Joseph Paintsil. The duo had a stellar season together at Genk, where Paintsil registered double figures in goal contributions before joining MLS outfit Los Angeles. Their friendship extends beyond the pitch, with the two often seen supporting each other on social media.

  • A Lively Presence in the Camp

The Black Stars have had several charismatic players over the years, including Asamoah Gyan and the late Christian Atsu, who lifted team morale with their humor and energy. Bonsu brings back that spark, known for his lively personality and ability to create a positive atmosphere among his teammates. Beyond his footballing talent, his humor and charm make him a valuable presence in the squad.

4. Versatility Across Both Flanks

Calling Bonsu versatile would be an understatement. Blessed with quick feet and strong dribbling skills, he excels on both wings and has incredible speed, almost as if he runs on nitrogen. His natural ability helped him shine in his debut European season, eventually making him Sarpsborg’s biggest sale in the Norwegian league.

A move started by a Ghanaian and finished by a Ghanaian.

Bonsu’s adaptability also extends to defensive positions, as he is capable of playing both left-back and right-back, giving the Black Stars a tactical advantage.

  • Golden Boy Award Nominee

In 2023, Bonsu was shortlisted for the prestigious Golden Boy Award alongside fellow Ghanaian talent Ibrahim Osman. He made the list twice, first with Sarpsborg 08 and later at Genk, solidifying his reputation as one of football’s brightest young stars. Ranking 60th placed him among the best young players in the world, alongside Spanish and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal.

KRC Genk confirm the signing of Christopher Bonsu Baah (18) from Sarpsborg FF on a 5-year deal.

The forward, who made the Golden Boy shortlist, arrived in Europe in March from Shooting Stars FC.
