FirstBank Ghana donates GH¢200,000 to support community development initiatives

FirstBank Ghana has committed GH¢200,000 to support education, healthcare, and community development projects as part of its 9th annual Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CR&S) Week celebration.

The funds were distributed to five key organisations: Making Learning Happen, Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Foundation, Heal Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Project, Ghana National Polio Plus Committee, and Rotaract District 9104.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the bank’s head office annex in Cantonments on Wednesday, October 29, the Managing Director of FirstBank Ghana, Victor Yaw Asante, said the initiative reinforces the bank’s long-standing commitment to social impact and sustainable development.

“This year, FirstBank Ghana is committing a total of GHS200,000 to support strategic community initiatives. Through these targeted interventions, we aim to deliver impact that is measurable, meaningful, and sustainable,” the Managing Director stated.

The donations form part of activities marking this year’s CR&S Week, held under the theme “Hands of kindness”.

The initiative highlights the organisation’s commitment to promoting kindness, responsibility, and service as everyday values.

Among the beneficiaries, Making Learning Happen received GH¢50,000 to enhance access to educational resources for deprived schools.

At the same time, the Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Foundation also received GH¢50,000 to support children and families battling cancer.

The Heal Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Project received GH¢50,000 to help improve critical healthcare infrastructure, with the Ghana National Polio Plus Committee and Rotaract District 9104 receiving GH¢30,000 and GH¢20,000, respectively.

Victor Asante, the MD, noted that the bank’s corporate responsibility efforts are not one-off events but part of its long-term sustainability agenda.

“Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability remain integral to our long-term strategy and stakeholder agenda. It reaffirms our social licence to operate and reminds our stakeholders that FirstBank exists to create more than just economic value,” he added.

Beneficiaries of the donations expressed their heartfelt appreciation to FirstBank for the support.

A representative from the Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Foundation shared how the donation has directly impacted families in need.

“I’m grateful to FirstBank for the donation we received through Lifeline for Childhood Cancer. My son was diagnosed with cancer at an early stage, but with the intervention and funds from FirstBank, he has recovered well. I urge the bank to continue extending its support to families in deprived communities battling childhood cancer.”

From Rotaract District 9104, a representative also commended the bank’s continuous partnership:

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to FirstBank and our very own Victor, for believing in our vision. Over the years, you’ve supported us, and we appreciate it immensely. Your support means a lot to us, and we’re thankful for your trust. This year, you’ve emphasized environmental protection — a cause we strongly share. Thank you for your generosity and your commitment to making a positive impact.”

Similarly, Making Learning Happen acknowledged the bank’s contribution to its educational drive:

“We extend our sincere appreciation to FirstBank for their cash donation last year and again this year. The GH¢50,000 they’ve donated is a significant boost to our goal of donating one million desks to schools nationwide. With their support, we’ve been able to donate 600 desks so far. As Oliver Twist would say, ‘Please, sir, I want some more!’ Thank you, FirstBank, for your generosity and commitment to education.”

Since its inception nine years ago, FirstBank’s CR&S Week has become a flagship initiative promoting staff volunteerism, environmental stewardship, and social impact.

The 2025 edition runs from Monday, October 27, to Saturday, November 1, featuring staff-led activities across the country and collaborations with non-governmental organisations to promote education, health, and youth development.
