The forecourt of the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council (Ministries) has been transformed into a bustling epicentre of commerce and networking as the Upper West Region hosts its maiden Wa Vendors Expo.

The unprecedented two-day trade fair has successfully drawn vendors from across the country to one central location, creating a vibrant marketplace designed to empower local startups, foster crucial wholesale connections, and champion women in business.

Organised by Mary Baalie, CEO of Masung Royal Stores, the event was borne out of a desire to elevate female entrepreneurs and streamline regional trade.

“It’s a trade fair that brings businesses together. We are primarily focused on empowering women, especially those in business, and it also helps create valuable business connections,” Baalie explained.

She noted that while many locals have the drive to do business, they often struggle to access wholesale suppliers directly. The expo bridges this gap by bringing diverse regional vendors directly to the people of Wa.

For the participating startups, the high foot traffic has been a game-changer. At Stand 2, a massive crowd flocked to Fari’s Bag, where quality items such as cloth bags and towels were being sold for as little as GH₵10. The vendor, Kanton Farihana, was visibly overwhelmed by the huge patronage.

“Since morning when I arrived, I’ve not rested,” she shared, adding that she underestimated the turnout and would need to bring extra help next time to manage the rush. “Because they are affordable and they are quality… I will always come, anytime.”

The sheer variety of goods on display has kept attendees captivated and their wallets open. Taadu Amanda, representing Fragrance World by Ella, praised the initiative as an excellent platform to introduce the brand to a new audience, assuring buyers that their products can keep them smelling fresh for up to 48 hours.

Similarly, a representative of Naaj Collections, who travelled all the way from Tamale to participate, attracted curious buyers with a playful marketing pitch by advertising clothes for “only 1 Cedi” before revealing the actual, yet highly affordable, prices. Buoyed by the large crowd and the success of similar events previously held in Tamale, the vendor expressed immense optimism about their sales.

“Alhamdulillah, we are just starting, and you can see the crowd. So there’s hope,” the vendor said. “Insha’Allah, by tomorrow we’ll be going home with 50k! We hope so.”

As the first event of its kind in the region, the Wa Vendors Expo is already proving to be a resounding success. It has not only provided a vital financial boost for emerging enterprises but has also firmly demonstrated that the Upper West Region has a strong appetite for dynamic, large-scale commercial opportunities.
