A potentially catastrophic fire at the Dodowa Market in the Greater Accra Region was successfully contained by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the early hours of Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
According to a post shared on Facebook by GNFS, the fire, which broke out around 1:25 a.m., threatened to engulf the entire market, prompting an emergency response from the Katamanso Fire Station.
Under the command of ADO I Simon Sosu, firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes of receiving the distress call.
Reinforcements from the Adenta and Madina Fire Stations were quickly dispatched.
Through a coordinated and rigorous firefighting effort, personnel managed to bring the blaze under control by 3:06 a.m. and fully extinguished it by 4:51 a.m.

Despite the intensity of the fire, the GNFS reported that only 12 metal containers and their contents were completely destroyed, while six others sustained partial damage.
Remarkably, firefighters were able to save more than 50 market sheds and numerous other containers, effectively averting the total destruction of the busy trading hub.

There were no injuries or fatalities reported.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
However, officials say the rapid containment underscores the importance of preparedness and inter-agency cooperation during emergencies.
The GNFS has commended ACFO II Osmond Anum, Deputy Director of Operations, and the Tema Regional Command for their leadership and coordination during the incident.
Supporting agencies involved in the firefighting operation were also acknowledged for their vital contributions.
