For someone who did not stay in a hostel during her university days, the recent play put together by Ebo Whyte and his Roverman Production team was very entertaining.

To say I was impressed is an understatement. All my boxes got checked through out the show. From the set up to storyline, to humor to lessons… I got it all.

I must however mention that I did not enjoy the venue for the production. Place was warm and the seats seemed low. Honestly glad the team will be moving back to the National Theatre for the Festival of Plays.

When Roverman announced it will be moving its last quarter production to the Burma Camp Hall, I had my misgivings.

Firstly, because I was used to the National Theatre and secondly, was worried about the traffic situation and parking space.

While the second part of my stress was handled perfectly by the military, the Burma Hall did not impress me… at all.

The show

By 4pm on Sunday, December 3, I was seated at the Burma Hall with some friends to watch ‘For Girls – The Spell’.

Every member of my team was in high spirit. Since this has become some sort of tradition for Hilda, Anita and myself, we knew that enjoying an Ebo Whyte show means reporting to the venue before 4pm.

My colleague, Cornerlis was a wonderful addition to the team.

For Girls centered around two friends who had gained admission to the university.

With both girls coming from a strong Christian background, their focus was to live the ‘Christ-like’ kind of life.

image 223

Esther (played by Daniella Asarebea), got on everyone’s nerves with her holier than thou attitude. She was the kind of person most youth today will not want to associate with or have as a room mate.

But her friend, Ivy (played by Amerinda Adei Kotey) was my star performer for the day.

image 214

Many will argue that she was liked because she was more accommodating and a bit relaxed with her Christianity and while that may seem hypocritical, I believe it was because she was a bit more real or relatable.

In short, the girls got to experience university life by meeting and interacting with characters from all walks of life.

image 222

There was the hostel’s errand boy, played by Obed Amu Mawutoh (I remember him from Husband Material) and the youth fellowship leader played by Rockson Obeng.

image 215

Audience were introduced to the village girl cum slay queen (portrayed by Ernestina Twumasi), the foreign student (Awe Ogon) and the social media influencer (Praise Precious) who did not want to share a room with Mary and Magdalene, that’s Esther and Ivy.

image 220

Then we had the other main male characters, that is Righteous or Dracula (played by Gabriel A.B Attepor) and Thomas (Roland Amoah Awuah).

An interesting twist to the storyline was how both guys fell in love with our two girls… I can’t write it all, you need to watch this production. It is an order!

Finally, my favorite people; the jama squad lead by Ken Nii Saki Sackey.

image 213

Ken is an old soul who has been with Roverman for as long as I can remember and to see him play such a role was very entertaining.

His positive vibe rubbed off on all the jama members whenever they got on stage and even got the audience joining in.

In short, For Girls was a good play. I loved it.

There are also characters like Esther’s mom and Ivy’s father (Jason Anim Nyamekyeh) who deserve special mention. They can sing.

Stage and ratings

I have always praised Ebo Whyte’s stage designer. In fact, the team has introduced us to some awesome set designs this year but while this play had a beautiful set, the size of the venue’s hall made it seem crowded.

image 221

A bigger stage would have opened up the set more and given us an opportunity to better enjoy the show. The set gets an 8 out of 10 from me.

Esther will be rated a 7 because she is annoying, while Ivy takes home a 9.9.

Our social media influencer gets a 9, and did I forget to mention her voice? So deep and soothing.

image 224

Dracula also gets a 7, while his best friend, Thomas gets a 9. The errand boy, I will give a 10/10… so youth leader can manage with a 9.

For the jama team… it is a 100 for me. Never had that much fun in university, hence my appreciation for everything they did.

Well done Nii Sackey and team.

PS: Roverman Production is heading back to the National Theatre for the Festival of Plays…. That is the best news ever..

image 217

Please get your tickets and let’s meet this Xmas. Bring your friends in the diaspora. Show them what we can do or are doing here in Ghana.

They will appreciate an Ebo Whyte play more than the crowded beach gatherings. Yes, I have said it.
