Fear grips Akoti health centre staff after armed men storm facility

Health personnel at the Akoti Health Centre in Assin Wurakese in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region have called for enhanced security measures following a violent attack on a patient receiving treatment at the facility.

The nurses and other health workers say they have been gripped by fear and panic since the incident, which occurred last Sunday and briefly compelled staff to abandon their posts.

Although services have since resumed, the health workers are demanding urgent intervention from security agencies and health authorities to guarantee their safety.

The incident followed a violent altercation involving a man identified as Yaw Buabeng and a couple, during which all parties reportedly inflicted cutlass wounds on one another.

Daniel, who reportedly suffered deep cuts to his arm, was the first to arrive at the Akoti Health Centre for medical attention. Shortly afterwards, Yaw Buabeng was also rushed to the facility, bleeding heavily from injuries to his head and hand.

However, sources said that while nurses were attending to Buabeng, a group of about ten young men, armed with machetes, sticks and clubs, stormed the health centre and assaulted him, beating him severely.

The attack caused panic among the health staff, who fled the facility in fear for their lives.

The matter has been reported to the Assin Fosu District Police Command for investigation.

Meanwhile, a team of police officers from the district, led by the District Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police Jacob Kumdzro, together with the Assin Fosu Municipal Health Director, Mr Benjamin Amoakoh, visited the Akoti Health Centre to assess the situation and engage with staff.

During the visit, the officers assured health personnel that measures would be put in place to enhance security and ensure their safety and wellbeing.

The Divisional Police Commander, ACP Dr Asare Nyarkoh, said the police were taking proactive steps to engage the community and educate residents on the consequences of violence, vigilantism and other unlawful acts.

He disclosed that the prime suspect, Yaw Buabeng, who allegedly led the attack on Daniel’s household, was currently receiving medical treatment at St Francis Xavier Hospital under police guard.

ACP Nyarkoh appealed to residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
