The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region that claimed eight lives, including two senior government ministers.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, announced the tragic news at a press conference on Wednesday, August 6, and directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the victims. He also extended the government’s condolences to the bereaved families and the nation.
The deceased include Muniru Mohammed, acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East; and Samuel Sarpong, a Vice Chairman of the NDC and a former Kumasi Mayor.

In a press statement, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf extended his heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the government and people of Ghana, and the families mourning the loss of their loved ones in this national tragedy.
He further conveyed his solidarity with the Ghana Armed Forces and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) during this difficult period.
“The African Union stands in full solidarity with Ghana in mourning this profound loss,” said H.E. Youssouf. “May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”
