Ex-MP urges private sector participation to improve state transport efficiency

Former Okaikwei North MP, Fuseini Issah, has called on the government to create an enabling environment that allows private sector involvement in the operation of state-owned transport systems.

Alhaji Issah expressed concern about the efficiency of government-run transport services, arguing that performance could improve if private operators were given a more active role.

“Government itself should sit back, create the enabling environment and allow private participation. I believe that with models we have tried, such as Aayalolo, if private individuals were allowed to own buses that operate on the routes or become part of the system, it would bring efficiency, because we are rational beings,” he said.

He spoke on Channel One TV.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over alleged artificial scarcity in urban transport.

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has summoned officials of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other operators following reports that some drivers deliberately reduce vehicle availability, particularly during peak hours, to inflate fares.

In response, the GPRTU has announced plans to deploy a task force to monitor operations and sanction drivers found engaging in unlawful practices, as pressure mounts on authorities to restore order and efficiency to the country’s transport network.
