Former Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum has spoken widely about several initiatives implemented under the previous government to enhance the educational experience of students and teachers in Ghana, confidently stating that every teacher in Ghana received a laptop before his tenure ended.

He made this known in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, February 14.

“Every teacher got their laptop before we left, you can check it with the unions, you can check in with them and it will be confirmed that everyone got it,” Mr Adutwum confirmed, reinforcing his commitment to equipping educators with the tools they need to succeed.

He also spoke about the efforts made to equip SHS students, particularly first-year students with tablets. Mr Adutwum emphasised that the prioritisation of first-year students, particularly in the distribution of tablets and e-books, was a major focus under the previous government.

“All first-year students had been prioritised, because first-year students have E-books and the E-books had been downloaded onto the tablet, it started 6 months before we left office,” he said

“By the time I left office, around 200 to 300 schools had already received their tablets,” he continued, stressing that the distribution process has not been halted.

He also outlined the integration of a new curriculum that is currently being implemented, which was partially made possible by funding from the Mastercard Foundation.

This funding was used to develop digital textbooks, marking a significant step toward modernizing education in Ghana.

The former Minister for Education noted that e-books are vital for the curriculum, as tablets are essential for accessing this digital content. Without them, he warned, students may face challenges in utilizing the resources effectively.

In addition to the distribution of e-books, Mr Adutwum highlighted the introduction of innovative technology in teacher training and assessment. Teachers are currently being trained to use AI-driven assessment portals, which allow for instant grading of student essays.

“Teachers are being trained to use AI assessment portals. When a student writes an essay it can be graded for them with AI,” he remarked

The integration of artificial intelligence enables teachers to provide immediate feedback to students, enhancing the learning process.

“So assessment is instant, and you have teachers getting feedback themselves and giving feedback to the students through the assessment portal,” he added.
