Esaaba Esi Eunice Essien pledges inclusive leadership after decisive GUPS win

Esaaba Esi Eunice Essien has been elected President of the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), pledging to lead an inclusive and unifying administration following her decisive victory at the Union’s 23rd Annual Emergency Delegates Congress.

Essien secured 126 out of 128 valid votes cast, representing over 98%, a clear show of confidence in her leadership at a pivotal moment for the national student body.

The Emergency Congress was convened after logistical and procedural challenges disrupted the originally scheduled 23rd Annual Residential Delegates Congress at the University of Ghana, Legon.

In line with Chapter 6, Article 36 of the GUPS Constitution, the Electoral Commission organised the emergency sitting at Knutsford University College to ensure constitutional continuity.

The provisional results have been certified by GUPS Electoral Commissioner Samir Osuman, confirming Ms. Essien’s historic win.

Following her election, Student Representative Councils (SRCs) and affiliated institutions nationwide — including UPSA, Wisconsin International University College, UniMAC–Ghana Institute of Journalism, IBNJ, Multimedia Institute of Ghana, and Jayee University College — issued congratulatory messages praising the new leadership and pledging support for a united and progressive GUPS.

In her acceptance speech, Ms Essien thanked members of the General Assembly for ensuring a successful election despite the challenges.

She also commended the GUPS Electoral Commission for its principled execution of constitutional responsibilities and acknowledged the role of the Ghana Police Service, particularly the East Legon and Airport Divisions, for maintaining law and order.

“I pledge to run an inclusive administration that brings everyone on board,” Ms. Essien said. “No one will be left behind as we work together to restore confidence, strengthen unity, and advance the collective interests of all professional students.”

The successful Emergency Delegates Congress is being widely hailed as a testament to GUPS’ constitutional resilience, signalling a renewed commitment to accountability, unity, and democratic governance within the Union.
