Eni has published its latest sustainability report, “Eni for 2024 – A Just Transition”, detailing the Italian energy giant’s efforts and achievements in advancing a more sustainable and inclusive energy future. Now in its 19th edition, the voluntary report outlines how Eni is aligning industrial growth with environmental protection and social progress.
The report highlights a pivotal year for sustainability disclosure, marked by the introduction of the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). While Eni issued its first CSRD-compliant Sustainability Statement, it also chose to maintain its annual Eni for report to offer stakeholders more accessible, in-depth insights into its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
“We live in times of rapid and complex change,” said Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi in his message to stakeholders. “The ability to anticipate and transform is one of Eni’s distinctive traits. In 2024 we continued on our path of transformation and achieved concrete results, driven by an industrial model that embraces environmental, economic, and social sustainability.”
Key Achievements in 2024
Among the notable progress reported:
Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Eni achieved a 55% cut in net Scope 1 and 2 emissions in its Upstream operations compared to 2018 levels, and a 37% overall reduction company-wide.
Methane Emissions: The company reaffirmed its ambition to reduce methane emissions to near zero by 2030.
Water Stewardship: Eni committed to achieving water positivity by 2035 at 30% of sites with significant freshwater withdrawals in water-stressed areas.

Progress on Energy Transition Technologies
The report outlines significant strides in Eni’s satellite model—an integrated business structure designed to support the energy transition. Subsidiaries Plenitude and Enilive featured prominently:
Plenitude surpassed 4 GW of installed renewable capacity and is targeting 15 GW by 2030. The company also expanded its electric mobility infrastructure to 21,000 charging points, serving 10 million customers.
Enilive increased its biorefining capacity to 1.65 million tonnes and aims to exceed 5 million tonnes annually by 2030, including expanded production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Eni also advanced its innovation agenda with the commissioning of the HPC6 supercomputer and the launch of Eniquantic, a quantum computing venture. It announced the conversion of its Livorno refinery into a biorefinery and initiated a financial and operational revitalization of its chemicals business, Versalis.
A Broader Commitment to Just Transition
Beyond climate and technology goals, Eni emphasized its commitment to people and communities. The company reinforced human rights protections, workplace safety, and gender-based violence prevention, and deepened partnerships with international organizations such as the ILO and IFC to improve conditions along its agri-feedstock supply chains.
In 2024, Eni ran over 100 local development projects across 21 countries, supporting access to energy, water, healthcare, and education—efforts closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“Eni for 2024” reaffirms the company’s long-term vision to integrate sustainability into every facet of its operations, demonstrating how it seeks to create enduring value for stakeholders and lead the charge toward a just and responsible energy future.
