Energy Commission sounds alarm on 'shoddy wiring', urges public to use only certified electricians to prevent fires

The Energy Commission (EC) has issued a strong public advisory, urging homeowners and businesses to exclusively engage its certified professional electricians for all wiring work to prevent fire outbreaks caused by substandard electrical installations.

The call was made by Samuel Frimpong, a Senior Public Affairs Officer at the EC, during a major stakeholders’ forum on the enforcement of electrical wiring regulations held in Techiman.

The event, organised and sponsored by the Commission, brought together a diverse cross-section of the community, including electricians, hairdressers, market women, security personnel, and the general public.

Mr. Frimpong pointed to “countless” electrical fire outbreaks in homes, markets, and institutions, which official investigations have traced back to the negligence of uncertified individuals.

“Electrical wiring must not be seen as a mere talent but as a skilled profession,” Frimpong asserted. “It is imperative that only licensed professionals are permitted to perform electrical work to ensure safety and compliance with national standards.”

The forum aimed to sensitise the public on the triple benefits of hiring qualified personnel: enhanced safety, reduced electricity consumption, and long-term cost savings for consumers.

The message resonated strongly with participants, who thanked the Commission for its educational efforts.

Echoing the community’s appreciation, a prominent voice also called for an expansion of the campaign. Nana Kubi Boateng Nsusumesaa, an electrical engineer and the Achempemhene of Wenchi Ncheraa, admonished the Commission to take its sensitisation drive to the grassroots.

“To achieve true nationwide impact, the Commission should extend this crucial education to rural areas through community information centres,” Nana Kubi Boateng advised. “This will help local people understand not only the safety aspects but also the direct importance of energy conservation to their livelihoods.”

The Energy Commission’s campaign underscores a critical public safety issue, positioning the choice of a certified electrician not just as a matter of quality, but as a vital decision for the protection of life and property.
